Visit from Tom Doorley

Today 5th and 6th class were paid a visit by well known food and restaurant critic Tom Doorley.

Tom spoke about review writing and his many experiences in restaurants around the country. He took lots of time to answer all the questions put to him by the children.

It was a great afternoon and everyone enjoyed it.

Class Trip to UCC

Yesterday 5th and 6th Class were joined by 4th class for a trip to University College Cork for a Graduation ceremony.

Everyone had a really great time.

We recently took a visit to Garter Lane and took part in a workshop based on the art of Chinese New Year.

Spikeball County Finals

Last week NJS took 4 teams to the County Finals of Spikeball. We had a great day and played against Waterpark and Whitechurch.

One of our teams narrowly lost out on a place in the finals.

Thought for the Day

It’s that time of year again when friends and family think about the Christmases of the past and plan for the coming holiday with their loved ones in mind. As we reflect on this wonderful holiday, we must keep in mind that Christmas is not just any holiday but may be the most important one of the year for some people. It is a time for remembering, a time to share the goodness of your heart with others, and for expressing with words and gifts what someone means to you. It is a chance to make wishes come true and to give something from your heart. It is a chance to give a message that will express love and caring to the ones we care about the most. As you write your messages, take the time to make a Christmas wish for each and every person on your list. 

With these thoughts in mind I would like to give you what we here at NJS think are the best wishes for this holiday. 

Here are our examples of Merry Christmas Wishes:

• Happiness– May your life be filled with joy and happiness and may each new day bring you moments to cherish.
• Love– On this joyous day, and throughout the new year, may your life be filled with an abundance of love.

I am delighted to announce that Alexis Ndzie in 4th class (Ms. Kavanagh) has won in the anti litter poster competition with Hasbro. I will be in touch in the New Year with a date for the prize giving at Hasbro's factory.

Trip to WIT Maths workshop

This week we had a trip to WIT for a Maths Games workshop. We played combatorial games that required us to see what numbers were key to us winning games. We had to look out for patterns that made it impossible for our opponent to win the game.

Irish Grammar App for smart phones

Irish Grammar (Gramadach na Gaeilge) is a relatively new app that is available for both Apple and Android devices. It presents grammar rules section by section, explaining the rules in simple English, followed by practice quizzes at the end of each section.

There are more than 1,000 grammar exercises contained in these quizzes. At the end of each quiz, a summary and explanation of answers is given.

Learning Logs

In an effort to support individual learning and to cater for each pupil's preferred learning style, this year I will be asking the children to create a learning log for particular topics that we cover.

I have told the children that they can show their learning in a variety of ways such as written project, drawings, diagrams, story, poem, song, drama, project, presentation. Whichever method they choose however should include key points and topics covered in class.

This week and last week we have studied Irish history with a focus on ancient buildings, historical sites, ruins and monuments as well as some national buildings.

I have asked the children to create their first learning log on one, several or all of the buildings covered in class. These include ring forts, hill forts, passage tombs, crannogs, beehive huts, round towers, monasteries Norman castles and Georgian buildings.

This learning log is due in for Friday 19th September.

Today in class we began to talk about the possibility of Scottish Independence.
